The new sessioning and dependency changes on E-R really made me stop and think about how I train my horses. Even more so than I already had when I learned how to properly train my horses for show.
But I believe I have a tentative plan for my horses now. First, I am going to have to try to cut back to ~5 foals a year, which won't be too hard considering I typically have about 7. Second, I am going to attempt to train a handful of horses myself 2-4 hours a day.
Third, I decided to take out a new notebook, and fill out one page for each horse's training records. On their page, I keep track of where they are in ground work, greenbroke, or discipline work, as well as I keep note of when they reach 1y 6m to 2years so that I don't have to keep recalculating in my head when I can start saddle work.
Fourth, I think I have a plan for how I am going to manage 60+ horses with only 2-4h a day to work them. (Granted only about half are receiving sessioning)
Birth - ~1y 5m Trained by hands
~1y 6m Hand training to verify they are proficient with their ground skills
~1y 7m - 1y 11m Hand exercising, focusing on lunging on the flat, then maybe some treadmill or cavalletti work
2y - ? Saddle work with hands
3y? Hand training to verify they are well broke, then start disicipline training
I will have my first fut. nominated foal next season, so I still have to figure out how I will prepare for the futurities.
I also want to stop and brag on one of my yearlings though.Check out No Sunlight 'Til Dawn.
Sired by my best stallion, and out of one of my best mares, this little guy is only 1year 9months old, and look at him! He is adapting well to my new training plan. We are still working on bringing out his best too.
I AM ABSOLUTELY LOVING THE NEW CHANGES!!!!
What a fabulous boy!
ReplyDeleteThat colt is amazing! My Mangalargas don't have a chance against him :)
